Description

Johnny Cash''s five-decade musical career was loaded with bigger-than-life landmark moments. None were more memorable than the Man in Black''s historic concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin State Prison, and the beloved albums that documented those shows. Cash''s passion for prison reform and rehabilitation inspired him to perform a series of concerts for inmate audiences, and two of these unique events were documented on Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. These albums, originally released in 1968 and 1969 respectively, remain among Cash''s best-selling and best-loved recordings. At the time of their original release, they revitalized his career, and played a crucial role in his crossover from the country music world to the mainstream pop charts.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison fully captures Cash''s gritty intensity and hard-headed humanity, capturing a high-energy set performed for an equally spirited audience. With a set list tailored for the occasion, Cash focuses on songs dealing with crime and imprisonment, balancing dark subject matter with wry, playful humor. The album opens, appropriately enough, with the venerable "Folsom Prison Blues," and continues with such outlaw anthems as "Cocaine Blues," "25 Minutes to Go, "The Wall" and "I Got Stripes," alongside such Cash classics as "I Still Miss Someone," "Orange Blossom Special" and "Jackson," with the latter track featuring Cash''s wife and frequent duet partner June Carter. The album closes on an inspirational note with "Greystone Chapel," a song written by convict Glen Shirley, which Cash and his band learned especially for this show.

Perhaps even more so than its predecessor, Johnny Cash at San Quentin captures Cash at his most raw and uninhibited. The artist''s raucous rapport with his captive audience is obvious on an inspired mix of Cash classics ("I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues"), jailhouse ballads ("Starkville City Jail," "San Quentin"), traditional tunes ("Wreck of the Old 97," "There''ll Be Peace in the Valley") and well-chosen covers (Bob Dylan''s "Wanted Man," the Lovin'' Spoonful''s "Darling Companion"). The album''s most popular track, though, remains the Shel Silverstein-penned novelty number "A Boy Named Sue," which became the biggest hit single of Cash''s career.

These timeless examples of Johnny Cash''s individuality and artistry are pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl and have been mastered from the original stereo tapes, with exact reproductions of the albums'' iconic original cover art.

Great Stuff!

While not offering a complete version of Johnny''s greatest hit: "Folsom Prison Blues," this re-release of the "67 Smash does include a duet featuring June Carter Cash who appeared with Cash at San Quentin in San Rafael, CA.

This is not my favorite Johnny Cash album, but along with Folsom Prison, probably one of the five most important Cash albums. Everybody should own this due to its historical significance and great performances.

I hate to write a bad review of the album, as I think it does a great job of capturing both the live-in-prison vibe and Johnny''s personality. But like another review said, the record came out completely warped. It plays on one side because I can press it down, but the needle just can''t stay on the other side. And the packaging came completely apart. I''ve never even gotten a used record in this bad condition, let alone a "new" one.

This is a "Prime"-worthy supplier? I don''t think so.

It seems this album was cut a number of different ways, but this cut only contains 10 songs. Some of these I think are from the Folsom Prison album. Like a lot of albums in the complete Columbia collection there is a collection of songs that were on other albums. But this album is really good in the fact that its live. Songs are as follows 1)Wanted Man, 2)Wreck Of The Old 97, 3)I Walk The Line, 4)Darling Companion, 5)Starkville City Jail, 6)San Quentin, 7)San Quentin #2 , 8)A Boy Named Sue, 9)(There''ll Be) Peace In The Valley, 10)Folsom Prison Blues. I was able to pick the Johnny Cash at San Quentin LP up at a recent estate sale for $1.00. Its in near mint condition and the owner kept the shrink wrap on the cover.

Johnny says they are taping the record and are broadcasting it in England.

Wanted Man, Darling Companion (With June Carter Cash & Carl Perkins) Starkville City Jail and San Quentin are songs I never heard before. Starville City Jail didn''t sound to good, the words just didn''t flow right....

On San Quentin, Johnny ends up playing it twice and later says on the album they may play it later on.

The biggest disappointment here is Folsum Prison Blues. It could have been the stand out song on this LP but it is cut off after only 27 seconds. Why? I don''t know? Johnny does about 45 seconds of talking and strumming in the begininng, thanking the staff, gaurds & the warden, the inmates are heard booing after Johnny says "warden"..........Johhny remarks, "You don''t really mean that do you"? The inmates erupt in applause and cheers. Johnny starts singing FPB and after 27 seconds the song fades out and you can hear the inmate screaming and yelling: " more, more"...........sounds like someone at the taping pulled the plug on the song and the inmates knew it was coming..

The song A Boy Named Sue is censored, there is a long bleep to cover up Johnny saying: "I''m the son of a bitch that named you Sue". The bleep covers the SOB words.

Walk The Line is an fine accoustic version.

Sound Quality on the LP is fine. No year listed when it was recorded. Recorded during the making of the Granada Television program

If you already own the original vinyl or an earlier CD copy you may ask yourself if you need this ; well you certainly won''t be disappointed ,as a classic live recording (from 1969) gets the 5 star treatment- it includes 8 extra tracks including an extended medley. And the occasional swear words aren''t bleeped out !. (the ''Complete Performance''-inc'' Carl Perkins+ Statler Brothers tracks is available on a 2 CD issue). With his regular band -a star line up,despite the recent loss of long time guitarist Luther Perkins + Carter family back up, in excellent clear sound quality, with Cash in fine form, going through a strong & varied set, at possibly the very peak of his career. Plus on DVD(plays all regions) the previously hard to find, documentary from the time, made for ITV (55mins) that spends its time with some inmates & guards stories & backstage/concert footage. Its a fascinating ,unsentimental record of the time & really is more than just ''an extra''.. A real bonus included is a thorough booklet about Cash & his previous prison performances (including the story of the attendance of a young Merle Haggard ,who was greatly inspired) & details on this record & production + much more ,with the only possible(slight) gripe I could find being changing the striking original cover. So a few pounds gets you a lot of Cash- & you can ''take that to the bank''.
